| About the Union |
I.U.P.A. - The Israeli Union of Performing Artists - was set up in 1979 by a group of leading Israeli performing artists. The main incentive behind the initiative was the desire to provide assistance and to protect the professional rights of all performing artists, especially of those locked in a continual struggle against the deprivation of such rights.
From this need, emerged the initiative to incorporate all performing artists in Israel into one body whose objective would be to fight for an improvement in the working conditions of artists whether in the theatre, cinema, radio or television.
Israel's performing artists voluntarily give their services to all fund raising entities working for humanitarian goals: Israel Variety, hospitals, the Association for the War Against Cancer, the military, the border guards and more. In 1998, the "Award for Voluntary Service" was granted to I.U.P.A. by the Knesset Chairman in recognition of such services.
I.U.P.A. retains a close and good association with performing artist associations around the world and is even active within them. I.U.P.A. is a member of the management committee of P.A. - the umbrella organization of all performing artist associations worldwide. Naturally, this is also an honor for the State of Israel.
I.U.P.A. provides counseling to artists on professional, legal, financial and other issues.
I.U.P.A. has set up various committees to which the artist may present his problems and obtain answers on almost every issue.
I.U.P.A. not only protects the wages of the artist, but also fights for fair pay and for appropriate working conditions. I.U.P.A. . does all in its power to ensure that the artist is neither discriminated against, nor exploited and to enable him to perform before the public with pride.
On behalf of its members, I.U.P.A. negotiates, with bodies active both within and outside the field of performing arts. All this, in order to protect the best interests of its members, to improve their working conditions and to ensure that their wages are just and fair. The association does all in its power to ensure that the artist is free of everyday concerns in order to enable him to perform to the very best of his ability.
I.U.P.A. works side by side with various mutual aid funds which provide support and aid to needy artists.
